Bass has a very distinctive minimal style. He introduced his signature “kinetic type” which is one part of his design style I really like. The look hand-cut and merge well with the surrounding visual elements. In terms of other visual elements, I really like the loosely-cut blocks that fill up the negative space. They make the designs seem like a jigsaw or a game. His use of white and then two popping colours also works well.

Library Research taken from the book 'Saul Bass, A Life in Film & Design' by Jennifer Bass & Pat Kirkham. Iiked reading this book and understanding the iterations and design choices taken by Bass. His designs are torn back and colour isn't always the biggest visual element. Instead he uses colour to only draw attention to areas of interest and interaction. What is most important, is the actual rhetoric and shapes I find.

Today was the interim presentation. Matt and Myself each brought a poster that were of a very different approach.

Below is my poster.

Some of the feedback we received from the critique can be seen below.

After the major critique we gathered with a couple other groups for a more narrow critique. We wrote down some things that were voiced as seen below.

After the critique Matt and myself sat down to discuss the the direction and progression of our work. We came to the conclusion that would we would explore his poster and we would each develop this in idea in a few different ways whether it was through another instrument or reshaping or adding elements to it. We believed that we needed to further the connection it had with an earthquake/ sound wave. We also want to create an event name so we can be consistent with our branding throughout our touch points.

We also started discussing how this poster could potentially ‘run out’ across the other touch points. We talked about whether Matt focuses more on the poster and third item and i the website. We wish to continue with our animation idea however we may compile into one video to keep a clear animated promotion of the event.

These are some of the early ideas that spurred on my poster that I made for this weeks critique. I hadn’t actually developed any typography aspect to these as i wasn’t going to explore these further. The general information is there though.
