One style that I have been looking at recently is that of Eastern European design. I like the somewhat harsh and blunt style of graphics as I think it helps create nostalgia. For example, the poster of the boat as seen above would perhaps be overwhelmed in detail if done a grungy style for example. However what Czechoslovakian design does well, is it peels back those unnecessary details and using the shapes left over, makes them pop out of the page with bright colours. I also like the use of a sans-serif font composed to the side of the illustration. This works well, as the visual elements already tell the story, and so the text is less important, yet is still of importance - hence the contrasting black colour.
Retreating back into pure formalism, designers from this area viewed type design as little more than a funny game. Creating obscure rules that are as simple as possible. Although technologically very proficient, and often groundbreaking, this work addresses few of the problems that occupy the minds of most type designers throughout the world.
Really like this french illustrator and the fact that while her visual elements posses a rough, hand-crafted feel, the composition of the designs is really quite structered. The use of colours which are toned down mold into eachother which I also quite like.
