4.1 - Illustrative Design Research

For my final brochure I want to incoporate my own indivudal and orignal illustrations as I they will hopefully a real, yet imaginative idea as to how, what and what it feels like to be involved in the purchase and givng of my chosen gifts.

01.

This first illustration shows two on a double page spread. Both are monochrome and is one of the most successful techniques used on illustrations. This is because an illustration should be able to portray what it is without any colour, it also ensures that the design can be used on any background. With these illustrations, I like that they both have no clear outline stroke and so almost merge into the background. The use of simple curved lines on the bin bag illustration meanwhile help create depth and despite just being white, they also provide texture.

02.

The illustrative drawings as seen above arent particular my style, in terms of their message which could be perceived as quite dark and strange. however the slightly detailed hands, facial expressions and clothing are areas similair to what I like to draw. My intentions for my brochure are to illustrate the physical action of owning/receiving or buying the gift and to do this in a minimal yet detailed approach. This style of the drawing shows both these attributes as the lines used to show details only show a broad and minimal representation of the actual surface.

03.

This illustrative is succesful in the way it shows a range of detail and texture in the flower petals. Each flower is different and so this has been recognised by differentiating the line width and density used on each flower. The use of the colour green also helps portray the natural profile of a flower, while the white fill is minimal and represemnts negative space well.

04.

Similar to the previous, this illustrative design uses green tones to emphasize a fresh and natural aesthetic. much of the design features these green tones however where it is successful, is in the areas where a bright pink used to represent the flower bud helps bring the whole composition some needed vibrancy and contrast. Another technique/element used in the design is the two-sided background whereby the point in which both sides meant draws the viewers attention into and then down the vines/roots of the plant.
